What can you do about climate change?

To the editor:

On one recent 90-plus degree day, I was talking with a local resident about how hot it was for this time of year. She said she has lived in Cape Coral for over 20 years, and has noticed, year after year, that it has become much hotter. She said she thought there is something causing global warming, but didn't think there was anything anyone could do about it.

This fatalistic view of global warming and climate change seems to be prevalent, but there are actions we can take to reverse climate change by committing to a few simple changes in our lives.

First, educate yourself about the facts of climate change. Understanding the science of this issue isn't as difficult as you might think.

Second, make a commitment to reduce your carbon footprint: reduce meat consumption, pick one day a week not to drive your car, or contact a local organization that is committed to addressing climate change.

One such organization is Citizens' Climate Lobby, a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change with chapters in every state.

With knowledge, commitment, and optimism, we can all help to improve our planet's health.
