Chamber speaker: Happy employees are productive employees

Do you want to be more productive at work? Get happy.

Do you want your employees to be more productive? Create a happier work environment.

That's what Roxy Hambleton, nationally certified professional organizer, told business people Wednesday at the monthly North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Business Leaders Luncheon at the Shell Factory.

Hambleton said as a professional organizer, she has seen her clients become more productive, but there was something else needed in the equation.

"They would say there were so much more productive, but then would hit a plateau. They would tell me 'I organized things and I know what I need to do, so why am I not doing it?'" Hambleton said.

The answer comes from the connectivity between productivity and happiness. Hambleton said workers are 31 percent more productive when they are happy.

She said through her research she found 10 keys to happiness and productivity that would get businesses over that hump.

"We have a line. Some people live over that line, others live below it. Some of us live with guilt, shame, anger, negative feelings," Hambleton said. "Shame is the worst. I say if we can get them up to guilt or anger, that's a win."

That doesn't make them happy, however. The idea is to get them up to hope, joy and happiness to live a longer, healthier life.

Genetics, which she said is about 50 percent of what makes you happy or unhappy, does play a role. However, while genetics can't change, there are other things that can make you happier.

"It's still within your control to change the other 50 percent. If someone is 30 percent happy, they can go up to 80 percent," Hambleton said. "You can change your set point."

Among the other keys is wealth, at least enough to help you and your family fed, clothed and under a roof comfortably. Wealth beyond middle class doesn't make you any happier, however.

Others include remembering experiences that put a smile on your face, like the best Christmas you ever had; emotional intelligence, which is how well you know yourself and other; and friendships with positive people who empower and not toxic ones, which are discouraging.

"There is nothing more important to your happiness and productivity than the people you hang around with. There's a saying that people are the sum total of the five people you hang around most with," Hambleton said.

The other ones include depth, beauty, faith in yourself, charity and maturity.

Hambleton said the proof is in the numbers.

Sales people do 37 percent better, and doctors are 19 percent better at diagnosis and work faster when they are living happy lives.

"If you raise a person's level of happiness, their brains at positive works a whole lot better than at negative," Humbleton said. "Your intelligence and creativity rises, your energy levels rise, in fact every business outcome improves."
