Golfers still wanted for Chamber’s Peete Classic

The North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce has gotten all the sponsors lined up for the third-annual Calvin Peete Classic at the Magnolia Landing Country Club on Saturday, Oct. 19.

However, there are still plenty of good spots available for those who want to get their clubs out and participate in a foursome.

Currently, a little more than half of the 72 spots have been filled for the event. Lenny Cannova, Chamber member and tournament organizer, said he isn't worried yet, since many who play wait until the last minute.

"In our experience of doing this, people don't commit until the final week, so we're not nervous yet," Cannova said. "We started this three years ago and it's gotten better ever since."

Cannova said the money will go to the Chamber, its foundation and its scholarship fund, as well as some to the Gulf Coast Humane Society, which will have a tent at the event with some of the animals.

The cost is $85 for an individual and $340 for a foursome, which includes two carts. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Lunch will be provided afterward, with prizes given to the best foursomes. There will also be raffles and a silent auction, for which the proceeds will go to the Humane Society.

Peete, a North Fort Myers resident, was a true golf pioneer as the winner of 12 PGA tournament titles, a two-time member of the United States Ryder Cup team, and a Vardon Trophy recipient for the PGA tour's lowest scoring average in 1983. Peete was the leading African-American PGA tournament title holder prior to the emergence of Tiger Woods.

Cannova said Peete's wife, Pepper, will be there to play once again with her two daughters and a friend, who will be flown in from Georgia for the event.

"It will be a great day of golf going for a great cause. We have a lot of repeat golfers and they have a lot of fun," Cannova said. "Plus, we're honoring a great man."

Major sponsors include title sponsor, Lee County Insurance Agency, and gold level sponsors Ellsworth Heating & Cooling, the Motorplex Shop and Applebee's.
