ARC gets generous donation from vet clinic

The Animal Refuge Center relies on the generosity of the public and private sector to be able to function.

Last Tuesday, a veterinary clinic that has shown great generosity in the past came through once again for ARC by donating nearly $8,000.

VCA Veterinary Hospitals presented a check to ARC at a special presentation at ARC at 18011 Old Bayshore Road.

Rob Spicker, spokesman and a member of the ARC Board of Trustees, was thrilled by the gift.

"We're very grateful, and it came at the right time. We rescued those animals from Louisiana and some of those animals had health issues that needed our attention," Spicker said. "This will really help pay for the care of those animals until we get them adopted out."

The money was raised through VCA Charities Pennies for Pets. Each clinic was challenged to raise the most money by asking their guests to round up the cost of their charges to the nearest dollar, and use the difference to support pets in need.

Two weeks ago, ARC rescued 17 dogs from the flooding in St. Landry Parish, La.

VCA, with four clinics throughout Southwest Florida, worked with ARC to make sure those rescued animals got veterinary care. It has also offered new adoptees a free initial wellness checkup for owners who obtain a pet through ARC with a coupon.

"We're grateful to have them as partners and we're appreciative of them supporting us and we look forward to continuing this relationship.

Spicker said it costs ARC nearly $1 million annually to care for the more then 300 dogs and cats in their no-kill shelter.

"It goes for the care of all the animals. From vet care to food to cat litter and staff salaries. It's used wherever they need it," Spicker said. "We depend on the donations from the public. It was critical to get that extra money for the extra cost."
