Summer camp signups start Monday

Summer camp signups are under way.

Registration started Monday at 8 a.m. for the Lee County Parks & Recreation Summer Camp program, which is expected to draw thousands of youngsters to programs, outings and activities at the department's traditional, teen and specialty camps.

Summer camps run for eight weeks from June 10 through Aug. 2. It is $75 per week per child and includes lunch and snack and the cost of field trips.

Parents are encouraged to sign up early. Each year, the allotted spaces at Wa-Ke Hatchee, Lakes Park and Estero Recreation Center fill up well before school ends.

In recent years, that has left the camp at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center and Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres as the only other options.

However, those locations have become more crowded, as well.

This year the max at North will likely be 90 for traditional camp (for children kindergarten through fifth grade) and 40 for teen camp (for sixth- to eighth-graders).

Last year North set the limit at 105, with an average of about 100 per day.

Lisa Weaver, supervisor at the North Fort Myers rec center, said promoting school grades is new to the camp program.

"Some kids are held back by age, but they want to be with more of their friends. We are promoting it by grade so it gives them some wiggle room on which camp they go to," Weaver said.

Weaver also said as opposed to the larger camps in Estero and Fort Myers, their camp demographics are a little different.

"People here find it difficult to pay for eight weeks of camp for three kids. Parents will usually get their tax refunds and pay for one week at a time," Weaver said. "We are finding people are signing up earlier, so I think we'll fill up before camp starts."

Camp registration is ongoing where space is available. Registration for swimming lessons and other aquatics programs begins Tuesday, April 2.

If you plan to register for camp at one of the four large recreation centers at Wa-Ke Hatchee, Estero, North Fort Myers or Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres, you need to obtain a membership first.

North campers will be taking trips to the new community pool, to the new library (provided it opens before the end of camp), guest speakers and large trips to Sky Zone, Sun & Fun Lagoon and more.

A household account at www.webtrac.leegov.com is needed if you want to register online.

All campers will receive a specially designed Lee County Parks & Recreation T-shirt. Camp sites will participate in countywide initiatives, such as service, learning projects, fitness and wellness programs, and National Park and Recreation Month. The 2019 theme for the National Recreation and Park Association is "Game On" and encourages the importance of play for all ages.
