Two events coming to NFM rec center

The North Fort Myers Recreation Center has two events coming up in the next few weeks.

On Saturday, the recreation center will host its second-annual recreation and wellness expo, which will be free and open to the public, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Participants are invited to enjoy music, demonstrations of popular classes, healthy food tastings and to learn about what the North Fort Myers community has to offer.

Last year, the rec center staff wanted to do something like this, and quickly threw it together, said staff member Stafford Milligan.

"This year, we had an entire year to plan and prepare for it. So we expect it to be much better than last year," Milligan said.

Last year's event brought in nearly 40 vendors. This year more are expected with some to be placed outside the building, with mobile buses and the like.

This could make for a very crowded park, with North Fort Myers Babe Ruth holding picture day and the football fields being home to the inaugural Wiffle Ball bash.

On March 9, the community park will hold its first free movie in the park (along with the Wa-Ke Hatchee Community Park), with the movie, "Smallfoot" starting at 7 p.m.

The movies planned are going to be family friendly. Popcorn and snow cones from Southern Snoballs will be available for purchase at both locations. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs.

"It's something that we would like to do twice a year or at least once. We're pretty excited about that one," Milligan said. "It depends on how the first one goes. If this March show works, we may shoot for one in November."

The North Fort Myers Recreation Center is at 2000 N. Recreation Way.
