The North Fort Myers Recreation Center has many programs designed for seniors, and it has just added two more.

"Ageless Grace" is a class that focuses on brain health and fitness.

This program uses five strategies to enhance balance, stability and range of motion while sitting in a chair.

The class is offered Thursdays from 9 to 9:45 a.m. The cost is $5 per class.

"They use tools to stimulate the five functions of the brain. Strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity and imagination, and learning," said Tiffany Vance, of the recreation center. "Your brain is in control of everything."

"Sit and Be Fit" is focused on toning and building muscle, while exercising from a chair using arm bands or free weights.

This class is offered Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $3 per class.

Vance said these classes already have eight participants, thanks to word of mouth, and can accommodate up to 30.

There are numerous programs offered for seniors at the rec center.

One of the programs they are really trying to boost is chair volleyball, which happens Wednesday at 12:30 p.m..

"We set up a badminton net in the dance room and use a beach ball. It's really fun, but we need participants," Vance said. "We get a different person each week coming in and we want them here at the same time."

For those who prefer to stand, Vance encourages people to come to line dancing on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for beginners and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon for intermediates.

Both are all ages, but tend to attract a senior crowd.

All participants must have a lifetime membership with Lee County Parks & Recreation.

Individual memberships are $10 and family memberships are $25 for two adults and any children under 18. Memberships can be purchased at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center.
