Baseball pros to share skills with young players

Minnesota Twins to hold annual clinic in North Fort Myers for Babe Ruth participants

January 30, 2019

Opening Day isn't until Feb. 16, but North Fort Myers Babe Ruth will be holding one of the most awaited events of the season this Saturday.

Kids will have the opportunity to learn to hit, pitch, catch and throw with the help of professional baseball players when the Minnesota Twins come to the North Fort Myers Community Park to hold its annual baseball clinic from 1 to 3 p.m.

Every year, the Twins hold clinics at Little League and Babe Ruth fields throughout Southwest Florida, teaching players between the ages of 5 and 13 the fundamentals of hitting, pitching the fielding.

Twins coaches and team farmhands (especially those from the Fort Myers Miracle, the Twin's Class A farm team) come to the parks to teach the finer points of the game in a format.

The children usually learn a lot at the clinic. They are separated by age and rotate among hitting, fielding and pitching stations.

When finished, they each get a baseball to be signed by all the players and coaches.

For more than 15 years the Minnesota Twins have done youth camps throughout Southwest Florida as a way to give back to the community and teach the game to a new generation of players. It is one of 10 parks the team will visit.

This is the third straight year the Twins will come to the community park after alternating between it and Kurt Donaldson Park, the home of Hancock Little League.

Stu Cliburn, former big leaguer and pitching coach for Rochester, the Twins top farm club, has been doing the camps for years.

Tommy Watkins, who played for the Miracle and the Twins, is another regular guest, though he couldn't do the camp last year.

All kids are welcome.
