On the fields, kids were running the bases, catching grounders and fly balls and hitting off the tee under the watchful eyes of coaches, who would soon be choosing what players would be on their teams.

Behind the fields, there was a long line of players and their parents waiting to register for the upcoming 2019 Babe Ruth baseball season at the North Fort Myers Community Park.

Registration is happening right up until opening day, there is still plenty of time to get your child signed up for the season.

Meanwhile, Jerry Neisman, league treasurer and coach, registered kids who had been in line for as long as an hour. Which Neisman said was a good thing.

"We're at 140 or 150 right now and we'll be taking kids even after opening day. We have three more days of evaluations so a few more will trickle in," Neisman said. "We expect to have competitive All-Star teams in every age group. We've done well the last few years and we continue to build them and teach them."

Last year, more than 210 kids dressed out for opening day.

All this past week, children between the ages of 4 and 15 were on the field to show their stuff to the coaches, with two or even three chances to convince them to draft them high, which they did over the weekend before the start of practice on Monday.

"We group the kids by ability so we can have balanced teams. We don't have one team be a superpower while another is not. We make them as even as possible and draft accordingly so that we have a level playing field," Neisman said.

From here on out is what promises to be a great season. The Minnesota Twins baseball clinic will be on Feb. 2 and open to everyone. Picture Day happens on Feb. 9 and opening day happens Feb. 16 and will last until closing ceremonies on May 4, two days before All-Star practice begins.

"We're going to have another Twins clinic for everyone in the area. We're looking forward to a great season. We are super-excited and ready to go," Neisman said. "Come and sign-up at the field or on the web site."

On Sunday, April 28, another big fundraiser will happen when the Fort Myers Miracle holds North Fort Myers Baseball Day.

Registration is $95 and can be done online at PlayNorthBaseball.com.
