A bipartisan solution for climate change

To the editor:

A recent article "Officials vow water quality diligence" summarized some of the water quality issues we face in Florida. Although there are local efforts under way to mitigate the effects of red tide and blue green algae, it is clear we also need to address on a broader scale the impact climate change is having on the severity of these problems.

In a remarkable bipartisan effort, five House members have just introduced The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 7173). The sponsors are two Republicans (Francis Rooney (R-Fla.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), and three Democrats (Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), John Delaney (D-Md.), and Charlie Crist (D-Fla.).

With this bill, a steadily-rising fee will be assessed on fossil fuels, starting at $15 per ton CO2 equivalent and increasing $10 per ton each year. All of the money collected will be returned to households, in the form of a monthly dividend. This bill will create 2.1 million jobs and encourage the growth of clean energy technologies.

Many thanks to Florida Representatives Charlie Crist, Ted Deutch, and Francis Rooney for their collaborative work on this landmark bill.
