Summer starts strong at Shell Factory

June 6, 2018

Memorial Day is when we remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country, first and foremost.

It is also a day where we can enjoy our friends and family, have a BBQ, or partake in some fun.

At the Shell Factory on Monday, they did a little of both. While there was no solemn ceremony or 21-gun salutes, there was a table set up by the Southwest Florida Military Museum with photos and memorabilia from battles past and the exhibits inside the retail store.

It was proof positive that the Shell Factory & Nature Park is not about to roll up the sidewalks for the summer. In fact, there will be plenty of things happening all summer long to keep you coming back.

As usual, there will be the Thursday Cruise-In, the thrice-weekly flea market, live entertainment and Bike Night. But there will also be two special events, one of which has been 80 years in the making.

Father's Day is Sunday, June 17, and dad will be made to feel like a king with the annual cookout. Dads will get free admission to the nature park, a free ride on the zip line and 20 percent off in the men's shop.

The family will get to play free mini golf and a special family fun package. Live entertainment in the Swamp Patio will be from 1 to 7 p.m., and dogs are invited to visit Dog Bones Caf.

After Bike Night on June 21, which will feature a new live band, the following Sunday, June 24, will be something of a birthday party as the Shell Factory will celebrate its 80th anniversary from noon to 5.

The event, which also coincides with National Seashell Day, will have the feel of a carnival, with old-time food and games, old-fashioned fun park prices, live entertainment and 25 cent admission into the Nature Park.

Rick Tupper, marketing director and CFO at the Shell Factory, said this will be the first huge event to commemorate the anniversary.

"We're going back to 1938 with our prices except for the food. We have things planned throughout the year," Tupper said. About every other month, we'll have a promotion to commemorate the 80 years."

In July, the Shell Factory will hold its annual Christmas in July event, with huge savings on much of the merchandise in the Holiday House, visits from Santa and more.

Traditionally, the Shell Factory hasn't done much on July 4 with Fort Myers and Cape Coral doing their own celebrations. Tupper said he may do something for the kids in the daytime.

The Shell Factory is at 2787 N. Tamiami Trail. Fore more info, call 995-2141 or go to
