North Fort Myers has plenty for residents and tourists to do over the summer.

Perhaps the most recognized place is the historic Shell Factory on the corner of Old and New 41. Opened in 1938 and known for years as one of the last great places for tourist kitsch, it has rebranded itself as a family destination for year-round residents.

And summer tends to be when families come the most.

With a fun park, nature park, zip-line, Capt'n Fishbones restaurant, Swamp Bar, numerous shops, including the newly expanded Holiday House which will host Santa during its annual Christmas in July event, the Shell Factory has become a favorite place to have your staycation at a fraction of the cost of going to Disney World or Busch Gardens.

The Shell Factory is at 2787 Tamiami Trail North. For more information, call 995-2141 or go to

Another obvious place for entertainment in North Fort Myers is the Lee Civic Center on the corner of state roads 78 and 31, where one can attend any number of weekly events.

Perhaps the biggest will be the Southwest Florida Space Con on June 16 and 17, a science fiction convention that will feature guests from the sci-fi and comic book realm that is sure to bring in thousands of fans.

There also will be its rotating number of events including the Florida Gun Shows and other events that may be coming down the pike but haven't been announced yet.

There are great outdoor opportunities in North Fort Myers through the summer.

The Lee County Posse Arena, just off Bayshore Road at 17401 Palm Creek Drive, brings in horse lovers from all over to learn to ride and compete in barrel racing and other events. Every year the arena hosts the PRCA Fort Myers and Cracker Day rodeos. The arena features jackpot barrel racing the first Friday of every month and will features clinics for riders as they become available.

At Nalle Grade Park, the Lee County Archers meet with their bows and arrows, with competitions the first and third Sundays of the month and open shooting on Thursday and a new indoor league on Tuesdays.

Nalle Grade Park is at 8350 Nalle Grade Road.

The North Fort Myers Recreation Center at the Community Park off Tamiami Trail is a veritable hub for things to do all summer.

There isn't much you can't do at the rec center, from playing baseball and football and pickleball to making ceramics, learning karate and more.

It has become a hub for summer camps for both youngsters and teenagers. Spots fill up quick, so make your plans now. The center also plays host to meetings and important athletic events each year.

One of the major losses this summer has been the North Fort Myers Community Pool, which has been shut down for renovations. The pool at North Fort Myers High School will serve as the interim pool until further notice.

The SHARE Club, comprised of seniors 50 and over, has dozens of activities and events in which seniors can participate in all year round.

Another group people can join is the North Fort Myers Civic Association, where civic-minded people can go to identify and help solve community issues. It meets the second Tuesday of every month at the rec center at 7 p.m.

For those who love golf, there are plenty of courses to choose from.

Del Tura features three nine-hole executive courses, while Heron's Glen and Magnolia Landing provide a par-72 18-hole course. Other executive courses include Six Lakes, Sabal Springs, Riverbend, Pine Lakes, Lake Fairways and El Rio.

Down the road, at the old drive-in theater, is the Wednesday flea market, where people come to find some good deals and sell some of their old castaways, which very well could be someone else's treasure.

And of course, there are a number of great restaurants and merchants. Visit the North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce website for a list of those at
