School bus driver gets kids off bus after vehicle catches fire

By Staff | Apr 27, 2018

A quick-acting Lee County School District driver got 22 children headed to Challenger Middle School off her bus Friday morning after the vehicle caught fire in the 700 block of Southeast 8th Street.

There were no injuries as a result of actions the district’s transportation director called “amazing.”

The driver heard a “pop,” stopped the bus, and saw smoke coming from under the hood, officials said Friday afternoon. She quickly got the children off the bus and a safe distance away.

The Cape Coral Fire Department was able to quickly extinguish the fire, and another bus took the students to school.

The cause of the fire was mechanical in nature.

“We believe the compressor locked up and caused the fire,” said district spokesperson Rob Spicker.

The bus was last serviced only two weeks ago, he said.
