Sun Splash opens Saturday as new season begins

By Staff | Mar 8, 2018

Sun Splash Family Waterpark, set to kick off its season Saturday, will wow attendees this year with the new colors and additions to create a more pleasant day at the park for its guests.

Waterpark Manager Sandy Greiner said the park has been rebranded with a new logo this year. After returning from her Orlando convention she told her staff over lunch she would like to rebrand the park with new colors.

“They were all in. I started working with the marketing company with the design of the logo. We changed all the colors in the park and painted everything to be the new colors,” she said of the blues and tans. “The logo has two palm trees that are green. It really pops and really looks good. It’s something really different.”

The replacement building, which is supposed to be turned over to Sun Splash staff next Wednesday, also reflects the new colors.

“We will have it for Spring Break and that is the only thing that matters,” Greiner said. “I think the building is going to wow customers a lot. I am excited.”

The building was rebuilt due to a fire that struck on July 6, 2016.

The building will house the new cafe, guest relations, cash office and gift shop.

“It’s huge and gorgeous,” Greiner said of the more than 4,000-square-foot space. “It’s just rearranged right. There was a lot of wasted space in the older building. There were hallways that led to nowhere.”

The state-of-the-art kitchen, she explained will be more like McDonald’s where individuals can buy and pay in one spot, as well as get their food and drinks in the same location.

The gift shop, Greiner said is four times bigger than the previous one. To fill the new space, she spent the off season shopping at a few conventions she attended due to the quality, less expensive items she found.

“I got a lot of ideas from there, too,” Greiner said, adding that one of those are little canvas taffy bags. She said in lieu of receiving the $5 back for the lockers, individuals can receive one of the bags instead.

Other items new to the gift shop are stuffed animals with Sun Splash’s new logo, matching mother-daughter beach cover-ups, fudge and other kinds of candy. Greiner said the gift shop will still carry towels, suntan lotion and sunglasses.

In addition to the new colors and building, Greiner said her staff has also built new stairway decks leading to and from the rides, as well as a tower to a slide.

“They have done remarkable,” she said of her staff. “They really got a lot done. I tip my hat off to the staff that worked really well this off season.”

Improvements were also made to Pirates Cove, which opened last year.

“Everything looks more piratey around Pirates Cove,” Greiner said.

Two bathrooms have also been renovated for this season.

Although it was not completed for opening day, Sun Splash staff will be working on the kiddy slides during the week.

“We want to make those really nice,” she said.

This is Greiner’s ninth season of being the manager of the park. She said she really enjoys the people, especially seeing the returning season pass holders.

“It’s fun to sell fun. I came from a banking environment. You are selling bank products. This is a whole great experience, you are selling fun,” Greiner said. “I think we have a really good quality product for the dollar amount that we are charging admission.”
