Common sense measures must be taken now

To the editor:

The horrifying shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Feb. 14 has brought home to us all the vulnerability of our children to gun violence. Cape Coral is no exception.

I started running for Congress in Southwest Florida long before this incident but the Parkland attack increases the urgency of breaking the deadlock in Congress on gun violence.

I support the Second Amendment and know that the vast majority of gun owners are responsible, law-abiding citizens. That said, we absolutely can, and must, take common sense measures to reduce gun violence.

Many of these measures are obvious and very specific: universal, vigorous background checks for all gun purchases; limiting civilian access to military weapons such as explosives, assault rifles, armor-piercing munitions, high-capacity magazines, and bump stocks that easily create mass-killing automatic weapons.

Then there are broader measures that must be taken: we need better funded and equipped mental health programs and access to high-quality healthcare for all, especially our most vulnerable populations. We also need to reduce the unprecedented level of corruption that dark money and unscrupulous politicians have brought into our government. And we need federal support for protection of our schools and students.

All of this simply makes sense. It will work for Cape Coral, Southwest Florida and America as a whole.

David Holden,

Democratic candidate the

19th Congressional District
