Cape Coral Bike Night

Evening of bikes, music and food set for Saturday

February 8, 2018
North Fort Myers Neighbor

Cape Coral's third Bike Night of the season will be held Saturday as planned after contractors working on the Southeast 47th Terrace Streetscaping project modified their construction schedule to allow the popular event to proceed.

The Collective will perform from 6-7:30 pm., followed by the slow bike race, and then, from 8:30-10 p.m., ZZ's Best, a ZZ Top tribute band.

Numerous vendors will be out to sell their wares up to 11th Avenue as the event opens at 5 p.m.

Bike Night, which alternates monthly between the South Cape and downtown Fort Myers, typically draws 15,000-20,000 attendees.

City staff met two weeks ago with representatives from Chris-Tel Construction to discuss options to enable the popular Cape event to be held in its usual location up and down Southeast 47th Terrace.

Chris-Tel agreed to modify its work plan to minimize interference with the event, which will make some modifications of its own so as to not impede construction.

Work has started at the intersection of Coronado and Southeast 47th Terrace first to prepare the attachment to the main, so people can still turn off Cape Coral Parkway and make a right onto 47th Terrace, said Todd King, special events coordinator for the city.

"Because they're starting to the west, they really aren't impacting our event, but we didn't want to be moving our equipment around their equipment," King said.

"On Monday, they're going to want to start hammering, so the less I need to get out of their way, the better."

The change to the work plan will not affect the overall work schedule for the $13 million project, which kicked off last month and is set to be completed by the end of the year.

When Bike Night was originally canceled, it was believed that the Shell Factory in North Fort Myers would hold Bike Night on Saturday instead. When Cape Coral announced it was back on, the Shell Factory decided to stick to its regular schedule, with its monthly Cruise-in and companion Bike Night scheduled there Thursday, Feb. 15. The Cruise-in set to begin at 4 p.m and Bike Night to begin at 5 at the attraction at 2787 N Tamiami Trail.

After some conjecture that the final Bike Night on April 14 might be cancelled, King said that one will go on as planned, only it will be on Lafayette Street from Vincennes to 15th Street, with a national act expected to headline.

"We want our community to continue to enjoy the event, so that will be our temporary home while the streetscape is being worked on. In October, we should be back to normal," King said.

Saturday's Bike Night in Cape Coral will be from 5 to 10 p.m.
