The North Fort Myers Recreation Center has been a huge hit for community residents. The only demographic they have seem to a little weak on drawing are young families with pre-school children.

Rec center officials are hoping to improve those numbers with several programs geared toward pre-schoolers.

Tiffany Vance, senior program specialist, said the programs are an opportunity to allow young children to be active and express themselves.

"We're trying to target that younger child audience and bring those programs here," Vance said. "We want to keep them active and engaged, so it isn't mundane. It's about being creative in how we teach children."

Pee-Wee Picasso is geared toward pre-schoolers and takes place every Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. The cost is $5 per class and $20 per month with teacher Ms. Angie.

After expressing themselves through art, kids can burn off some energy with Pee-Wee Gym from 11 a.m. to noon at the same cost with the same teacher.

On Wednesday, from 3 to 3:45 p.m., young kids are inspired to move through Imagination Yoga, which is yoga through storytelling. The cost is $8 per class and $20 per month with instructor Elizabeth Norris. The idea is for kids to learn their bodies and how they move, Vance said.

The program empowers cognitive, emotional and behavioral presence in childhood. It is also being offered to older children, to 6- to 8-year-olds from 4 to 4:45 p.m., and to children ages 9 to 11 from 5 to 6 p.m., for whom the classes are $8 per class and $25 per month.

Also, for children from kindergarten to fifth grade, will be Kick'n Kids Sports, which offers after-school athletics where kids learn the fundamentals in soccer, basketball and volleyball, and coaches use a variety of games and skills to inspire children to enjoy physical activity.

Kick'n Kids takes place on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. for children 7 to 11. The cost is $120 for the 10-week program.

Vance said there have been sign-ups with Kick'n Kids and they are hoping to garner interest in Pee-Wee Picasso and yoga.

"Whether it's through art or storytelling, bonding with other children this age. We want more families to come in so they can enjoy the center and see what we're all about," Vance said. "It's a nice, clean atmosphere for families to go to."

A one-time $10 facility membership is required for all programs, if you haven't paid it already.
