Adding insult to injury

To the editor:

Again the Lee School Board has insulted the intelligence of the Lee County voters.

In their workshop they tentatively decided to spend $888,000 for a special election to hopefully pass a 1/2 cent sales tax increase to fund their construction projects that included AstroTurf for football fields.

Board member Melisa Giovannelli was the only person to object, saying she wanted to see the district financial responsibility report.

In light of the Estero High blunder, cost overruns and no south entrance, I thought she made sense. Why do we need a special election when it is free in November, she continued. Good question. The superintendent and board said voters could not successfully do a November ballet because there were too many issues. What an insult.

The sales tax is a REGRESSIVE tax. It is discriminatory and hurts minorities, the elderly, the hard-working families. It is a known fact that this group has to spend the most income on goods and services.

If the district has $888,000 to spend (blow) on a special election then they do not need the sales tax increase.

That is hypocrisy. The money could be better spent filling teacher vacancies and paying the employees or offset Estero High cost overrun.
