Every two years, the best quilters in the state gather for one of the area's biggest and most colorful shows.

The Southwest Florida Quilters Guild will present its 11th quilt show this weekend at the Lee Civic Center, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $7 with free parking.

Quilters will converge for this judged show with their best quilts in tow. A national judge will judge their work, which will be displayed in the civic center for all to see.

"Quilters are very fervent about their craft, and this the first big show of the year. There will be others in Naples in February, there is one in Port Charlotte," said Lyn Bruner, vice president of programs at the guild. "Season is a good time because the snowbirds are here. Our membership includes snowbirds and permanent residents."

The event has been held previously at Harborside Convention Center and at the Grace Community Center on Hancock Bridge Parkway before coming to the civic center.

The event will feature an exhibit by the Art Quilters Unlimited, which is from Fort Myers, and serves as a get-together for people interested in quilts thanks to the help of more than 100 volunteers, both members and non-members.

More than 300 quilts are expected to be judged and exhibited, with about 2,000 people expected to attend this event which serves as the big fundraiser for the guild. Money raised is used for education.

"We bring in national quilting teachers and the cost of that can skyrocket. The money we raise is significant enough to fund us," Bruner said. "People come to see art. We're a different type of art display

The Southwest Florida Quilters Guild is a non-profit organization devoted to the art of quilting. It was formed in 1992 and has more than 185 members. The group holds its meetings every third Tuesday of the month at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center. Annual dues are $30 for those interested in joining, and many of the quilts they make go to charity.
