Civic & Community Corner: Next Civic Association meeting set for Nov. 14

November 8, 2017
By Mike Land , North Fort Myers Neighbor

The next meeting of the North Fort Myers Civic Association will be on Tuesday, Nov.14, at 7 p.m. at its usual location, Rooms 102A and B at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center. At that meeting a vacancy on our Board of Directors, which can be filled by a vote of our General Membership, will hopefully be filled. Any member considering a run for this position should review our website,, and the by-laws contained therein, and send me and, our Chair of Nominations and Elections, a resume. A motion to subscribe for a month to which would allow us to research over a century of News-Press articles to gather info on the history, leaders, events and points of interest in NFM, was tabled until the next meeting so Brenda Sizemore, who volunteered to lead this effort, can gather more info. Come hear her report. Our proposed NFMCA Pamphlet, a drastic revision and improvement by new member Laura Ray over the first pamphlet published last February, was approved in final form and will go to print shortly. Come see the three changes that our Board ordered at last meeting. Danny Ballard, By-Laws Revision Chair, proposed a few minor and technical changes which were approved by the Board and will next be presented to the general Membership for acceptance on Nov. 14. I will be proposing that our annual nominations for officer and directorships occur at our January meeting (instead of February as presently required), and that all candidates submit to such vetting as the Nomination Committee may determine during the ensuing month and said committee render a report of its findings one week prior to the February meeting. If no candidate be deemed qualified for a position by said Committee, new nominations, vetting by said committee and elections will be held at the February meeting. A Civic Pride project for NFM using online presentations by Oldsmar, Fl. and previous winners of the Florida League of Cities Award as inspiration, will be reported on by Brenda Sizemore, co-chair.

The NFM Community Planning Panel and NFM Design Review Panel met jointly on Nov. 7 and heard a presentation on behalf of a variance request at 8231 Scarecrow Road.

I attended an organizational meeting of the Lee County Arts Center, Inc. held at its registered office, 1206 Pondella Circle, which is also the office of Marni Briggs' Sun Country Realty. Present were the chief mover and shaker, Maryanne Howard, Marni Briggs, her associate Rose Ryan, Rudy Berndlmaier, its Treasurer and Dr. Tom Millins, principal of The Academy of The Arts, whom I had never met before, but who impressed me with his desire to help this fledgling group, his resourcefulness, creativity and general all-around charm. This group has created a set of Revised By-Laws and a Mission Statement which reads as follows:

"Lee County Arts Center will provide educational opportunities to the community in a wide variety of arts as well as encouraging appreciation of various art forms and artists in the area. To this end the group will also promote social interaction among its members, foster the exchange of ideas and promote and provide events, displays and opportunities for local artists and the community at large."
