ARC Starlight Auction expected to be biggest ever

For 23 years, the Starlight Auction has been the staple fundraiser the Animal Refuge Center, raising enough money for the shelter to operate for the entire year.

It has also been the place to be seen the Saturday after Thanksgiving. More than 300 people are expected to be at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 6 p.m. to bid on great items and raise money for ARC's mission.

Betty Hughes, board treasurer for ARC, said the auction serves as the biggest fundraiser of the year, and that tickets usually go fast and sell out long before the event, though there are sponsorship opportunities available.

"We raise about $225,000 to $245,000 per year. It's the cornerstone to everything we accomplish in 2018. As the auction goes, so goes our ability to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome hundreds of animals," Hughes said.

More than 150 items are expected to be bid on through silent and live auctions, so there will likely be something you will want to give your loved one. Among the items to be auctioned off are trips to resorts (local and across the country), cruises, airplane tours, artwork, sporting events, specialty wines, theater and fine dining packages, spa services, jewelry, cat and dog gift baskets, and much more.

"We actually have wine for a year. We have high-end wine, 12 bottles, for one special occasion on a monthly basis," Hughes said. "There will be a great variety."

There will also be a special "mystery" canine guest, which will share one of ARC's many stories of rescue and rehabilitation, which will be available to bring home, even during the auction, Hughes said.

Support at ARC's Starlight auction will allow the rescue to continue its mission of saving pets in need for 2018.

"It's pretty magical. Everyone there is an animal lover and has concern for homeless pets. It's a night of celebration," Hughes said.

Tickets are $75 and includes a free cocktail, admission into the auction and dinner, which promises to have everything except turkey and stuffing. The menu will consist of filet, ham, pasta, salads, cheeses and pie.
