Civic & Community Corner: Aug. 8 meeting to feature two important speakers

August 2, 2017
By Mike Land , North Fort Myers Neighbor

You may recall that on July 11 the Civic Association got four new elected members to its Board of Directors.

As a result, I scheduled a Special Orientation and Get-To Know Each Other Meeting on July 24 and we stressed teamwork and solidarity.

I reviewed a list of Meeting Do's and Don'ts and a List of Director Do's and Don'ts, which I prepared for this meeting and I think we are going to move forward as a more effective entity to improve the quality of life in NFM.

As an extension of that, I scheduled a meeting with our County Commissioner, Brian Hamman on Aug.7 at 11 a.m. to get to know him, how county government works, how he feels about the List of Needs for NFM that we've prepared and how we can help the county help us. It should be an interesting and informative meeting.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. (public invited) and it should be a block-buster because it features a double-dose of high informational speakers.

First up will be Debbie L. Diggs, Principal of NFM High School, who will review their programs and how our organizations can be of benefit to each other.

Danny Ballard, our liaison to NFMHS set up this meeting and he gets my thanks for doing so.

As you may recall an outpouring of between 200 and 300 people turned out for our last meeting, many wearing red NFMHS shirts and it became obvious to me that the main theme connecting long-time NFM loyalists is their affection for our high school. And so, I call upon all you former NFM high schoolers to come out to hear and question your new principal.

Our second speaker will be Dave Loveland, director, Lee County Community Development which covers a wide range of very important functions.

Dave is widely conceded to be one of the most knowledgeable, powerful and influential department heads and his talk should be extremely interesting.

He and I have discussed the List of Needs for NFM that this organization has promulgated, and his thoughts on our requests that fall within the purview of his department will be helpful.

In February, we printed 2,000 pamphlets explaining who the Civic Association is, what it does and hopes to do and we have given all of them away and are looking to revise it and print another 2,000 copies.

I call upon any of you having skill or experience in writing or designing promotional materials, and any of you having nice pictures of anywhere in NFM, to help us by contacting me.

You can review our last pamphlet on our home page at We will be discussing this revision at our meeting, so come help us out, please?
