It’s all about the pie at Marrone’s Pizzeria

Pizza at Morrone's Pizzeria at 5660 Bayshore Road in the Foxmoor Shopping Center has had customers coming back for more.

Morrone's Pizzeria opened in October to a strong initial response that continued right through season.

Michael Morrone started in a storefront in North Philadelphia in the late 1980s and owned a few restaurants on the Keys before selling them and coming to North Fort Myers, where he plans to move to since he loves the area.

Sal Musso, manager at Morrone's, said it's just a matter of more people finding out about their little place and all the authentic dishes it serves.

"In summer, it's slow and everyone suffers. Overall, we're doing very well. We just need the get the word out," Musso said.

Morrone's specializes in thin-crust pizza the way it would be made in Little Italy in New York City, with a slight crunch on the bottom crust and the full flavor of mozzarella on top, all for as little as $6.50 for a small cheese pizza.

Pizzas are done as you would expect them, with Musso spinning the dough by hand and throwing it in the air until it's nice and thin. From there he puts on the toppings and puts it in a brick over for 10 minutes until the crust is crisp.

Among the unusual specialty pizzas are the New Jersey, with sliced tomatoes, baby spinach, black olives, ham, cheese and no sauce, and the Bayshore, with bacon, chicken and ranch dressing. The steak pizza also has no sauce, but lots of cheese and onions.

It also has other specialties, including authentic Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches with onions and Cheez Whiz, meatball and sausage parm grinders and dinners, as well as salads, desserts and more.

Musso said their signature dishes include their homemade meatballs, for their spaghetti and meatballs. They also have Chicken Perrentino, which is chicken, spinach and melted mozzarella with pasta.

"Everything is made from scratch and we have many different varieties," Musso said.

Much of their business comes from catering. Party platters, sides, salads and pasta for up to 20 people can be ordered for any affair, big or small.

"We offer chicken marsala and parmesan with side salads and pasta and garlic rolls, whatever they want. We charge per person, about $12.95 per head," Musso said.

Morrone's Pizzeria is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed Sunday.
