What would you like to see in your new NFM Public Library? As you know if you've been reading this column, the County has agreed to build us a $13 million facility near the present library and has already awarded contracts for the architects and general contractor and are hoping for a grand opening in about a year and a half. So now is the time that we, the general public of NFM, some of whom have been working for some eight years to make this a reality, get an opportunity to tell the project architects and the county staff that will be present at this meeting what we would like to see in and around the library. Mark your calendar for Monday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. at the NFM Rec Center. It's Your Library! Hope to see you there!
The North Fort Myers Design Review Panel meets jointly with The NFM Community Planning Panel on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Rec Center.
The North Fort Myers Civic Association meets the second Tuesday in September, the 13th, from 7 to 9 p.m. Guest speaker will be Ronni woods, State Director of Florida Main Street, who will explain the program which has benefitted nearby towns such as Punta Gorda, Arcadia and Sarasota and who will be considering our Business 41 as a possible recipient of its education, publicity, training and possible improvement grants. Bring every merchant, lot or building owner, every investor or possible tenant along Business 41, to this important meeting.
The next evening, Wednesday, Sept. 14, the NFM Chamber of Commerce and The NFM Civic Association will be co-hosting a Meet and Greet the General Election Candidates' Forum from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rec Center. They will be inviting all county and state candidates from our area (sorry, you won't get to meet The Donald or Hill and Bill) and, in addition to pressing their flesh and talking to them during the "Meet" part of the program you will have an opportunity to ask them questions from the audience. Skip Mitchell, who has done a bang-up job at moderating our two recent Primary candidates' forums, will be moderating again. Yes, I know that election day in November seems a long way off, but between Early Voting and Absentee Voting, we want to schedule this important and potentially explosive event before the ballots get mailed to the voters! The first two forums played to full houses, so bring your friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers, etc. and get there early! I will be looking for you.
And finally, I want to thank the NFM Chamber of Commerce for inviting me to be a celebrity waiter at their recent fundraiser. Because I was wearing a green eyepatch to cover the sequelae of my car crash of 10/9/16, I was invited to come to center stage and give my impression of a "pirate," whereupon I summoned my best "AARGGH," "shiver my timbers, matey," "Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum" and other centuries-old Pirate Platitudes. I was most happy that I didn't spill a morsel of food or a drop of beverage on the diners at my assigned table, Dora Miller, Peg Crishal, Rudy and Adrienne Berndlmaier, John Mooney and Vince and Terry Silva who shelled out "booty"for this very worthwhile cause.
